An issued US patent can be licensed, for payment of money or for a promise of future royalties. This arrangement is fairly well known, and no explanation is probably needed.

A pending patent application can also be licensed. This fact appears to be less well known. In fact, this type of license is relatively common, and can in fact provide excellent benefits to the inventor or owner of the application.

Some types of licenses are more beneficial than others to the inventor or owner of the patent rights.
